About Vitamin E

Recent advances in vitamin E research show that vitamin E is a family of nutrients, not just a single compound. Vitamin E consists of several forms of tocopherol: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. This vitamin E complex contains pure, natural unesterified mixed tocopherols including alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherols, which assure superior antioxidant protection along with all the synergism associated with 100% Natural Vitamin E Complex. Scientists believe different components in vitamin E may be responsible for different actions. Alpha-tocopherol, which researchers long felt was the active component responsible for any protective antioxidant effects. However, when tested in scientific studies, results for vitamin E often varied widely. These variations occurred because the vitamin E supplements used - either natural or synthetic - contained components other than alpha-tocopherol. Good vitamin E product should provide mixed tocopherols.

Natural vitamin E preserves the integrity of cellular membranes throughout the body by scavenging free radicals that break down membrane lipids.

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant. The naturally occuring d-alpha tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E. Vitamin E, a powerful free radical scanvenger, is considered the first line of defense against lipid peroxidation. It protects the integrity of the body's cellular membranes, and has the ability to unite oxygen and prevent it from being converted into toxic peroxides. Vitamin E plays a beneficial role in the cellular respiration of muscles, especially cardiac and skeletal muscles. It also causes dilation of blood vessels. In addition, vitamin E plays a role in nucleic acid and protein metabolism, mitochondrial function, and hormonal production. Vitamin E is crucial to proper cellular function; it protects and supports all physiological functions through its free radical scavenging activity, especially cardiovascular functioning. Food Sources: Wheat germ oils, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables. No side effect if taken as recommended. Vitamin E should not be taken simultaneously with an iron supplement. Taken together with vitamin B6, B12 & folic acid (As in Vitamin B-100 complex), Vitamin E can reduce heart attack by 70 %.

Clinical Studies

In a double-blind trial that involved 29,133 smokers, those who were given 50 mg of synthetic vitamin E daily for 5 to 8 years showed a 32% reduction in the incidence of prostate cancer and a 41% drop in prostate cancer deaths.1

The Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study (CHAOS) trial,2 published in 1996, is what really had gotten our hopes up. In that trial, people with existing heart disease who took natural vitamin E (400 IU or 800 IU daily) had substantially fewer nonfatal heart attacks compared to the placebo group after about 1.5 years

One observational study of 11,178 people aged 67 to 105 years found good results from combining vitamins E and C.3 The combination of vitamins E and C boosted the risk reduction to 53%. Long-term use of vitamin E granted an even stronger risk reduction of 63%.

A recent double-blind study suggests that vitamin E may be able to strengthen immunity. In this study, 88 people over the age of 65 were given either placebo or vitamin E at 60 IU, 200 IU, or 800 IU dl-alpha-tocopherol daily.4 The researchers then gave all participants immunizations against hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and pneumonia, and looked at subjects' immune response to these vaccinations. The results were impressive. Vitamin E at 200 mg per day and, to a lesser extent, at 800 mg per day significantly increased the strength of the immune response.

Preliminary evidence suggests that high-dose vitamin E may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.5 In a double-blind placebo-controlled study, 341 subjects received either 2,000 IU daily of vitamin E, the antioxidant drug selegiline, or placebo. Those given vitamin E took nearly 200 days longer to reach a severe state of the disease than the placebo group.
