Newsletter #78 --- Natural Approach to radiculopathy (Sciatica) and Neuropathy

Traditional medicine has absolutely nothing to offer for nerve regeneration for the hundreds of thousands to millions of people who suffer with peripheral nerve disorders. Peripheral neuropathy result from damage to the peripheral nerves. Radiculopathy results from pressure on or injury to nerve roots (Herniated disk, Spinal stenosis and Degenerative disk disease). Neuropathies may affect just one nerve (mononeuropathy) or several nerves (polyneuropathy). Peripheral neuropathy often affects people with diabetes and autoimmune diseases (Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus). Certain vitamin deficiencies, some medications and alcoholism can also damage peripheral nerves. Depending on the nerves involved, symptoms can range from a mild tingling or numbness in the fingers or toes to searing pain. One may lose some of the feeling in the feet or hands. One might also experience weakness or even paralysis of certain muscles or problems with one's bowels or bladder. One condition known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy when the nerve endings slowly die leading to loss of sensation in the feet, legs and hands which at times can be painful and can lead to weakness and difficulty walking. Some patients can be incapacitated by this condition. "Modern" medicine has nothing of any significance to treat this condition. However, there are some natural nutrients that can make a difference.

Natural approach to radiculopathy and neuropathy

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC). is an amazing nutrient. It is an amino acid responsible for transporting certain fatty acids into the energy producing portion of the cell known as the mitochondria.

In the last two decades, there have been multiple studies demonstrating the benefit of ALC for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive disorders. In more recent years, researchers have looked at the benefits of ALC for the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. In an Italy study published 2002, 333 patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy were randomized in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled fashion. Half of the patients received initial doses of 1000 mg daily of intramuscular ALC for 10 days followed by 2000 mg a day orally for the remainder of the year. At the end of the study, those patients treated with ALC showed a statistically significant improvement in nerve conduction responsiveness compared to placebo. In addition, after twelve months of treatment the ALC group had a statistically significant reduction of pain by 39% compared to 8% in the placebo group. The conclusion was that ALC was effective and well tolerated in improving neurophysiological parameters and reducing pain over a one year period. It was felt to be a promising treatment option in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

There have been other studies published within last year demonstrating the incredible benefits of ALC. In one study published out of England, animals pretreated with ALC seemed to have a protective effect on peripheral nerves that were experimentally destroyed. The authors of this study suggested that ALC may be the first agent suitable for the clinical use of prevention of nerve death after peripheral nerve trauma.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is another amazing nutrient. ALC is not the only nutrient that has shown benefit for peripheral neuropathy. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a sulfur-containing, vitamin-like substance that has the unique property of being able to recycle both water-soluble and fat-soluble antioxidants. Alpha Lipoic Acid in doses of 600 to 1200 mg daily has been shown in clinical studies to show benefit in patient with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Practising neurologist like Dr. Allen Josephs has been prescribing alpha lipoic acid to his patients with peripheral neuropathy and have been getting extremely satisfactory results. He also added acetyl L-carnitine (ALC) to the nutritional supplement regimen which he believes will further enhance nerve recovery. Other studies in animals have indicated ALC and alpha lipoic acid combined can actually reverse and repair the neurological and cognitive declines that occur with aging. Certain B-100 complex Vitamin including B1, B6 and B12 can have additive benefits as well for nervous system repair and protection.

Natural approach to Sciatica

In sciatica the sciatic nerves become trapped by a disc or narrowed joint space, and cause inflammation.

There are two ways to try and alleviate some of the symptoms.

First is to use anti-inflammatories such as Glucosamine/Chondroitin and omega-3 fatty acid in Fish oil or Opti-DHA to reduce inflammation of the joints and prevent further degeneration of your spine. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acid in Fish oil is helpful for neuropathy. Disc degeneration, which occurs in most people as they age, develops as the water content of the disc between the vertebrae starts to diminish. The disc is important as a cushion between the vertebrae. Dr. Allen Josephs, a practicing neurologist said that " In a case study with intake of oral glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for two years, there was MRI evidence of improvement in the disc in a patient with symptomatic spinal disc degeneration. The authors of the paper indicated that long term glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate intake may counteract symptomatic spinal disc degeneration, particularly at an early age".

Second is to reduce the inflammation of the nerves.

Anyone who has a neuropathy such as sciatica needs to make sure they supply the nerves with a good supply of essential vitamins and minerals, especially B-100 complex Vitamin, which are needed by the nerves to stay healthy. Vitamin E is also important. Take My Favorite Multi-Vitamin (No Iron) which contains a superior blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that supports the body in its fight against free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to the nerves. Take Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Ginkgo Biloba, Coenzyme q-10 and Opti-DHA. Some studies in people with nerve damage (the study group had diabetes) have shown that alpha lipoic acid at a dose of 600 mg per day may help decrease pain from neuropathy. Ginkgo promotes good circulation, and may have some anti-inflammatory effect as well. The usual dose is 60 mg three times daily. CoQ10 may be of value for neuropathy and is also good for the heart. It is a potent antioxidant. A typical dose would be 100 mg twice daily.
