--- Natural approach to your Eye care
The health of your eyes reflects the health of your body.
Dry eyes reflect deficiency of nutrient or allergy. Smog, chemical irritants, contact lenses, low humidity, cigarette smoke, aspartame, dust, wind, sun, air conditioning and heaters are common causes of dry eyes. Preservatives used in glaucoma and other eye drops like benzalkonium chloride and thimerosal has been shown to worsen dry eyes and to actually be toxic to the cells of the cornea.
Poor vision from cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are often caused or precipitated by a combination of exposure to toxins and poor nutrition.
Glucoma can be caused by long term use of steroid, over consumption of aspartame and monosodium glutamate which are known optic nerve toxins. Macular degeneration could be caused by over exposure to the sun and poor nutrition. Cataract can be caused by too much sun exposure, poor nutrition, heavy smoking or diabetes. Sunlight causes an increase in the rate at which harmful free radicals are produced in the eye, which causes oxidative damage and eye disease that can make you go blind.
Natural approach to your eyecare
Wear a pair of ultraviolet proof sunglasses or goggles and a hat with a trim whenever you are out into the sunshine.
Eat eye healthy diet: fresh deep green leafy vegetables, fruits and whole grains, deep-water fish, eggs, chicken and turkey with little red meat. Avoid refined, processed foods which are loaded with sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavorings and colorings. Eat berries, watermelon, carrots, citrus fruits, kiwi, almonds, olive oil and avocados. Keep your daily fat intake to less than 30% of your total calories.
Avoid optic nerve toxins like aspartame (NutraSweet), MSG, steroid, tranquilizers, antidepressants, lithium, MAO inhibitors, toxic antibiotics, benzalkonium chloride, thimerosal, smog, chemical irritants, contact lenses, low humidity, cigarette smoke, dust and wind.
Keep your diabetes under good control.
Take Omega 3 Fatty Acid. There were two studies published in the May 2007 Archives of Ophthalmology regarding poor visual health that can lead to blindness in the elderly. In the first study, researchers evaluated over 4,500 people between ages 60 and 80 who participated in a study by the National Institute of Health's National Eye Institute. It was found that those who ate more than two medium servings per week of fish were least likely to develop poor visual health that can lead to blindness. Authors felt that the omega fatty acids DHA help promote cell health and survival as well as improve blood vessel function. One should eat deep sea fish (Salmon, Tuna, Sardine) twice a week for omega 3-fatty acid or take Fish oil supplement Omega 3 Fatty Acid 2 gram a day.
Take Basic Preventive 5 Plus extra vitamin D for adult or Vita-Kids for children plus Calcium/Magnesium/VitaminD and additional Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, Coenzyme q-10 and L-carnitine. The second study published in the May 2007 Archives of Ophthalmology reported on over 7,700 participants. Researchers noted that vitamin D intake was associated with a reduced risk of developing poor visual health that can lead to blindness. People were split into five groups based on the level of vitamin D in their blood. Those with the highest had a 40% reduced risk of developing poor visual health compared with those with the lowest amount of vitamin D in their blood. Authors felt that vitamin D was effective by promoting cell health and preventing abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina.
Take Alpha Lipoic Acid , the most powerful antioxidant - Nature's ultimate antioxidant. It protects our eyes from oxidative free radicals' damage by the sun. Therefore significantly reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataract formation especially in diabetic patients. This is confirmed by Dr. Packer's research Laboratory at the university of California, Berkeley. ALA prevents cataracts and glaucoma. ALA reduces risk of aged related macular degeneration. There is preliminary evidence that ALA, taken in the amount of 150 mg daily for one month, improves visual function in people with glaucoma.
Vitamin C 1000-2000mg/day has been shown to reduce cataract risk. A study found that taking vitamin C supplementation for more than 10 years cuts the risk of early lens opacity - the first sign of cataracts - by 77%.
Eye support with Bilberry Complex and Lutein: Contains antioxidant Compounds which help maintain capillary strength and micro-vascular integrity especially in capillaries such as those in the retina of the eyes. Bilberry extract contains anthocyanosides (anthocyanidins) with visual and vascular enhancing properties. Bilberry reduces visual fatigue and improves light to dark adjustment through its affinity for the rhodopsin-opsin system, the pigment system which mediates both light and dark vision and visual adaptation to dimly lit spaces. In addition, the extract also potent antioxidant activity, promoting the retina's own enzymatic antioxidant defenses. In the vascular system the anthocyanidin extract supports the integrity of the vascular walls by increasing vitamin C levels within cells, decreasing the permeabilizing effect of certain proteolytic/lysosomal enzymes, stabilizing cell membranes, and stimulating the synthesis and connective ground substance tissue. Bilberry offers a safe and natural way to enhance the strength and function of the visual and vascular systems. Lutein Carotenoid is a potent antioxidants, protecting membrane lipids from toxic peroxidation reactions. Therefore it is important in the prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration Lutein has been shown to be associated with a reduced risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
Grape seed extract Grape seeds are a potent source of proanthocyanidins, or pycnogenols containing naturally occurring proanthocyanidins, natural powerful Antioxidant. Proanthocyanidins, a highly specialized group of bioflavonoids, have been extensively studied since the late 1960's for their powerful vascular wall strengthening properties and free radical scavenging activity. Proanthocyanidins (OPCs or PCOs) are one of the most potent free radical scavengers known, possessing an antioxidant effect up to 50 times more potent then vitamin E and up to 20 times more powerful then vitamin C. Proanthocyanidins also have an affinity for cell membranes, providing nutritional support to reduce capillary permeability and fragility. One interesting 6-week controlled (but not blinded) study evaluated the ability of grape seed OPCs to improve night vision in normal subjects. In this trial of 100 healthy volunteers, those who received 200 mg per day of grape seed OPCs showed improvements in night vision and glare recovery as compared to untreated subjects.

Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo biloba is another flavonoid-rich herb that may help reduce the risk of these eye disorders. Ginkgo neutralizes free radicals and increases blood flow to the tiny capillaries throughout the body, improving nutrient and oxygen delivery. In addition to its benefits for the eyes, Ginkgo promotes circulation to the extremities, helping to reduce the risk of diabetic neuropathy. Ginkgo has also been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of memory problems, a common condition in advanced diabetes
