Newsletter #132 --- Advanced Age and Gender Specific Multi-Vitamins
We know that there is a big difference between men and women in biology and physiology.
We know that people of different ages and at different stages of life also have specific nutrient needs.
Therefore, the one-size-fits-all multivitamin should be obsolete.
Age and gender specific multivitamins with added specific nutrients have arrived and are the preferred basis for optimal health.
Teens from age 13 through 19
This multi-vitamin will provide a strong nutritional foundation that helps fill the gaps most often seen in teen diets.
Adolescent boys have unique nutritional needs. This multi-vitamin should be an Iron-free formula that includes extra vitamin A and zinc, as well as sarsaparilla to support clear skin.
For female teens, This multi-vitamin should provide additional iron because deficiencies can be common due to menstrual cycles. It should provide vitamin B6 to support hormonal processes of the menstrual cycle and Calcium with silica to build bone density.
Women of Childbearing Age
During different stages of their childbearing years, women need additional nutrients.
Although folic acid is found in some foods, such as dark green vegetables, beans, lentils, orange juice and some grain products, all women who could become pregnant need a daily multivitamin containing 800 micrograms of folic acid. This amount of folic acid will help decrease the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) and aids fetal brain development in case of pregnancy. In addition, pregnant women need to ensure that their multivitamin also contains enough iron. Add Chaste tree berry standardized extract which is good for PMS and smoothing out mood and menstrual cycles" says Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, a herbalist and physician at the University of Arizona School of Medicine in Tucson. Chaste tree berry regulates a woman's cycle and boosts fertility. To help manage stress and PMS, you'll want to take B6 at least 50 mg. Vitamin A should not exceed 5,000 IU
Men from age 20 through 40's
Immune function is a big concern for folks this age. Take a multivitamin that contains vitamins B, C, and E, which they may be running short on. For a man who is interested in becoming a father, make sure it contains zinc, which can play a critical role in fertility. Zinc deficiencies have been linked to low sperm count. Get a Multivitamin that includes at least 15 milligrams of zinc which promotes healthy sperm production B vitamins are important for converting food to energy. This multivitamin should also provide essential nutrients for masculine functions. Add high-quality herbal extracts of Muira puama which helps improve libido and sexual function and ginseng which helps support healthy testosterone levels. It should also be Iron Free. Vitamin A should not exceed 5,000 IU. Take calcium to keep bones strong later on. Include an energy booster such as ginseng root extract -the "burnout remedy".
Men over the age of 50 and women over the age of 45
Vitamin D and calcium are important for bone strength and to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in older adults. The need for vitamin D increases after the age of 50. Men and women over the age of 50 have a reduced capacity to produce vitamin D through skin exposure to the sun. Supplementation with vitamin D at dosages of 800 IU daily or higher has been associated with a 23-26% improvement in bone health, especially for older adults. In July 2007, New England Journal of Medicine, a review article is published on the attributes of Vitamin D. Evidence indicates that at 2,000 - 4,000 IU per day of Vitamin D3 1000 IU, a person can reduce various cancer risks by 50%. Higher dosage of folic acid and B12 are needed in this age group. Deficiency in these nutrients could lead to pernicious anemia.
For 50+ men, this multi-vitamin should help support key concerns of heart, prostate and sexual health. It should be iron free. It should include extra pantothenic acid, zinc, niacin as well as herbal extracts of saw palmetto berry, Lycopene and Panax ginseng root.
