About Lycopene |
|
|
Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and the source of a tomato's red coloring. Large studies have come out showing this carotenoid akin to beta carotene to be particularly good at reducing the risk of various deadly cancers, including prostate, colon and rectum cancer, as well as heart disease. Warning: Keep out of the reach of children Scientific Studies One study followed 47,894 men for 4 years.1 Subjects who ate large amounts of tomatoes or tomato sauce (including that on pizza) had lower rates of prostate cancer. In an evaluation that compared these foods to others that were studied, lycopene appeared to be the common denominator.2 Some evidence suggests that lycopene may also help prevent lung, colon, and breast cancer as well.3,4 In one study, elderly Americans who ate a diet high in tomatoes had 50% fewer cancers overall than those who did not.5 References 1.
