Grape Seed Extract-V Size 30 capsulesDosage: 100 mgDirection: Adults take 1 capsule, 1 to 2 times daily between meals for 7 to 10 days, then 1 capsule daily or as directed by physician. Ingredient: Grape Seed Extract (Vitis vinifera) 100 mg. Standardized to 95% polyphenols About Grape Seed Extract Grape seeds are a potent source of proanthocyanidins, or pycnogenols containing naturally occurring proanthocyanidins, natural powerful Antioxidant. Proanthocyanidins, a highly specialized group of bioflavonoids, have been extensively studied since the late 1960's for their powerful vascular wall strengthening properties and free radical scavenging activity. Proanthocyanidins (OPCs or PCOs) are one of the most potent free radical scavengers known, possessing an antioxidant effect up to 50 times more potent then vitamin E and up to 20 times more powerful then vitamin C. Proanthocyanidins also have an affinity for cell membranes, providing nutritional support to reduce capillary permeability and fragility. The powerful proanthocyanidin compound is most abundant and available from the bark of the maritime pine and in grape seeds, or pips. Grape seed is rich in the catechin form of proanthocyanidins, plant flavonoids. Catechins help protect against oxidative damage to cholesterol, soothe mucous membranes like those in the digestive system, and inhibit certain enzymes which may lead to the growth of undesirable bacteria in the intestines. No side effect known if taken as directed. Scientific Studies Varicose Veins and Hemorroids A double-blind placebo-controlled study of 71 subjects with Venous Insufficiency (Varicose Veins) found that grape seed OPCs, taken at a dose of 100 mg 3 times daily, significantly improved major symptoms, including heaviness, swelling, and leg discomfort.1 A double-blind study of 50 people with varicose veins of the legs found that doses of 150 mg per day of OPCs were more effective in reducing symptoms and signs than another natural treatment: the bioflavonoid diosmin, widely used in Europe for this condition.2 Hemorrhoid is actually a special kind of varicose vein. On the basis of their evidence for varicose veins, OPCs are often recommended as a treatment for hemorrhoids as well. Edema After Surgery or Injury A double-blind placebo-controlled study of 63 post-operative breast cancer patients found that 600 mg of OPCs daily for 6 months reduced edema, pain, and peculiar sensations known as paresthesias.3 Also, in a double-blind placebo-controlled study of 32 "face-lift" patients who were followed for 10 days, edema disappeared much faster in the treated group.4Night vision One interesting 6-week controlled (but not blinded) study evaluated the ability of grape seed OPCs to improve night vision in normal subjects.5,6 In this trial of 100 healthy volunteers, those who received 200 mg per day of OPCs showed improvements in night vision and glare recovery as compared to untreated subjects.Atherosclerosis Although there are no reliable human studies, animal evidence suggests that OPCs can slow or reverse atherosclerosis .7,8,9 This suggests (but definitely does not prove) that OPCs might be helpful for preventing heart disease.References 1.
