About Ginkgo Biloba
For centuries, Chinese and Japanese traditions have used ginkgo leaves to support the brain, heart, and lungs. The active components of Ginkgo Biloba, the ginkgoheterosides, and the terpene lactones, enhance the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain and improve the transmission of nerve impulses, supporting mental acuity. Ginkgo Biloba offers nutritional support to the vascular system by sustaining the strength and elasticity of blood vessels and capillaries. In addition, it inhibits platelet aggregation and acts as a free radical scavenger. Ginkgo Biloba is the world's best-studied herb for maintenance of normal memory and mental sharpness, especially after the age of 40. It helps maintain normal circulation to the brain and the extremities. The most well-known use among American is the perceived ability of the products to improve short term memory. Other important effects include a protective effect on the blood-brain barrier and an antioxidant effect. The leaf extracts has also been shown to increase vasodilation and peripheral blood flow rate in capillary vessels and end-arteries in various circulatory disorders. Ginkgo leaf helps to maintain integrity and permeability of cell walls by inhibiting lipid peroxidation of membranes. Side effect: May occasionally cause mild gastrointestinal upset, headaches or allergic skin reactions. Warning: Do not take Ginkgo Biloba if you are taking Aspirin or Coumadin (Blood thinner) daily. This combination will cause excess bleeding in the brain or retina. Clinical Studies Numerous studies have found that ginkgo extracts can improve circulation.1,2According to a 1992 article published in Lancet, over 40 double-blind controlled trials have evaluated the benefits of ginkgo in treating age-related mental decline.3 Of these, eight were rated of good quality, involving a total of about 1,000 people and producing positive results in all but one study. The authors of the Lancet article felt that the evidence was strong enough to conclude that ginkgo extract is an effective treatment for this condition. JAMA a year-long double-blind trial of Ginkgo biloba in over 300 individuals with Alzheimer's disease or severe age-related mental decline.4 Participants were given either 40 mg of the ginkgo extract or placebo 3 times daily. The results showed significant improvements in the treated group. Eight double-blind placebo-controlled trials, ginkgo can significantly increase pain-free walking distance5 in patients with claudication due to peripheral arterial occlusive disease. One double-blind placebo-controlled study evaluated the benefits of Ginkgo biloba extract for women with PMS symptoms.6 This trial enrolled 143 women, 18 to 45 years of age, and followed them for two menstrual cycles. The results were impressive. As compared to placebo, ginkgo significantly relieved major symptoms of PMS, especially breast pain and emotional disturbance.Erectile Dysfunction (ED) 1991 study published in the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy Fifty patients diagnosed with arterial erectile impotence, received 240 mg of ginkgo leaf extract daily for a period of nine months. The patients were divided into two groups based on their response to conventional therapies. Twenty of the patients had previously experienced some success with conventional drug therapy, and were placed in the first group. The second group of thirty patients had not experienced erection following conventional therapies. Following treatment with the ginkgo leaf extract, all patients in the first group (20 men) regained sufficient and spontaneous erections following six months of treatment. The improvement continued through the nine-month treatment period. Nineteen of the thirty patients in the second group responded positively to the treatment, while eleven remained impotent. A 3-month double-blind trial of 70 individuals with Vertigo found that ginkgo extract given at a dose of 160 mg twice daily produced results superior to placebo.7 By the end of the trial, 47% of the individuals given ginkgo had significantly recovered.Ginkgo may also be effective for tinnitus (ringing in the ear).8-10References 1.
