DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands and is the most abundant hormone found in the bloodstream. The body uses DHEA as the starting material for making the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. Its production diminishes in most people after age 40. By age 70, DHEA level will be less than 30% of what they were at age 25 (Peak). Low blood levels have been associated with many degenerative conditions. DHEA is a powerful defense against age-related problems including diminished muscle mass, memory loss, joint discomfort, fatigue and sleep disturbances. It enhances immune system function. Research suggests that DHEA replacement therapy can have a number of beneficial effects. In a 1986 study based on 12 years of research involving 242 middle-aged and elderly men, small doses of DHEA appeared to be linked with a 48 percent reduction in death from heart disease, and a 36 percent reduction in death from other causes. Research also indicates that DHEA supplements may help prevent cancer, arterial disease, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's Disease. DHEA can also be used to treat lupus and osteoporosis, support immune system function and improve memory. It may also enhance longevity.

It is not recommended if you are pregnant, nursing or have breast, ovarian, uterine, testicular or prostate cancer. For women, decrease dose if develop signs of masculinizing effects (Loss of hair on the head and/or growth of hair on the face and acne)

DHEA appears to be helpful for osteoporosis in older women. A double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 280 men and women ranging in age from 60 to 79 years evaluated the effects of 50 mg of DHEA daily for 1 year.¹ The results suggest that DHEA can fight osteoporosis in women over 70.

One double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial evaluated the effects of DHEA in 24 women with this condition. The results showed that DHEA improved sexual function, feelings of overall well-being, and cholesterol levels during a 4-month treatment period.² Another double-blind crossover trial enrolled 39 men and women and found improvements in general feelings of well-being, mood and energy level over a 3-month treatment period.³

A double-blind placebo-controlled study enrolled 40 men with difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, who also had low measured levels of DHEA.⁴ The results showed that DHEA at a dose of 50 mg daily significantly improved sexual performance.
