About Acetyl-L-Carnitine |
|
|
Acetyl-L-carnitine plays a key role in maintaining acetylcholine level and neuroprotective function during aging, as many well-designed human and animal studies have shown consistently. Acetyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring compound that supports normal brain and nerve function during aging through various mechanisms. These include its actions on acetylcholine synthesis, cellular membrane stability. nerve growth factor production, and cerebral blood flow. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a potent form of carnitine used by the brain and nervous system. The amino acid L-Carnitine and its acetylated derivative, Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC), assist transport of fatty acids into cellular mitochondria for energy production. The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function. Both nutrients are found naturally in our diets. While most L-Carnitine research has focused on its role in cardiac and skeletal muscle, ALC research has concentrated on its role in brain and nervous system function during aging. ALC can serve as a metabolic source of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in brain function. And, unlike L-carnitine, ALC has protective antioxidant benefit for cell membranes. ALC appears to be absorbed intact and is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. Warning :Not recommended if you're pregnant or nursing. Keep out of reach of children. Clinical Studies Several double-blind clinical trials suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine delays the progression of Alzheimer's disease 1 2 and enhances overall performance in some people with Alzheimer's disease.3One double-blind trial 4 has found that acetyl-L-carnitine may be helpful for people with degenerative cerebellar ataxia, a loss of muscular coordination caused by disease in the cerebellum (the hind part of the brain that controls muscle tone and balance). Most research involving acetyl-L-carnitine has used 500 mg three times per day, though some research has used double this amount .5In an Italy study published 2002, 333 patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy were randomized in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled fashion. Half of the patients received initial doses of 1000 mg daily of intramuscular ALC for 10 days followed by 2000 mg a day for the remainder of the year. At the end of the study, those patients treated with ALC showed a statistically significant improvement in nerve conduction responsiveness compared to placebo. In addition, after twelve months of treatment the ALC group had a statistically significant reduction of pain by 39% compared to 8% in the placebo group. Side Effect No significant adverse or toxic effects have been reported. Side effects from taking acetyl-L-carnitine are uncommon, although skin rash, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, agitation, and body odor have been reported in people taking acetyl-L-carnitine .6 7References 1.
