About 5 HTP

5-HTP (L-5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a brain serotonin precursor.
A natural and safe alternative to tryptophan. 5-HTP is used by the body to synthesize serotonin, a neurohormone needed for melatonin production, appetite regulation, and mood regulation. 5-HTP is a natural product extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia plant, unlike tryptophan which is produced synthetically or through bacterial fermentation. 5-HTP crosses into the brain more readily than tryptophan as it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier without competition for uptake. 5-HTP is significantly more effective than tryptophan. Finally, research studies have shown 5-HTP to be safe at levels as high as 900 mg. As a result, 5-HTP is a safe and effective means of increasing brain serotonin levels.

Clinical studies

Fibromyalgia

In a Double-blind controlled trial, 5-HTP (300 mg per day) was shown to be effective in reducing many symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain, morning stiffness, sleep disturbances, and anxiety.1,2,3,6

Insomnia

For insomnia, a single 100-mg nighttime dose of 5-HTP was sufficient to improve the duration and depth of sleep in one placebo-controlled trial.5,10

Depression

For depression, 300 mg per day is often effective, though much of the research used 5-HTP in combination with drugs or was uncontrolled.7, 8, 9

Migraine headaches

The cause of migraine headaches is related to abnormal serotonin function in blood vessels,4 and 5-HTP may help correct this abnormality. For migraine headaches, amounts ranging from 400-600 mg per day have been shown to be effective at reducing the frequency and severity of attacks in most clinical trials.11, 12, 13, 14, 15

Weight loss and obesity

5-HTP reduces appetite by balancing levels of serotonin in the brain. Appetite reduction and weight loss (averaging 11 pounds in 12 weeks) has occurred with amounts of 600-900 mg daily.16, 17 In another clinical trial, 750 mg per day has been shown to be effective at decreasing carbohydrate and fat intake, and promoting weight loss.18
